Growing up near Chicago gave him a chance to listen to all kinds of music. He started playing the piano at age 7 as a student of his mother concert pianist Jenny Hubner Geering. She said she knew he would be a good student because he threw a metronome across the room when he was practicing and that showed spirit! By the time he was eighteen he had seen and heard every major conductor with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Stephen organized his own fusion band of pop, jazz and rock. “Stephen Geering’s Latest Scheme “played the Chicago club circuit and he formed a new band when he moved to LA. The LA band consisted of some of LA’s premiere session players.
Stephen studied music improvisation in San Francisco with Art Lande, a brilliant ECM artist. Studying Film and TV scoring with the renowned Don Ray ( Hawaii Five O , Twilight Zone ) at UCLA has led him to a career that has included scoring feature films, television , and many Interactive Games such as Scooby Doo, Jurassic Park and the Frogger franchise. A ground breaker in the game industry ,he was the first composer to create a complete 5.1 music surround sound experience including all in-game music for players( Magic the Gathering Battlegrounds ).
He wrote and produced the theme music for the US Ski Team TV image spots and was so impressed with a young guitarist at his daughter’s high school that he hired him to play the high energy shredder guitar.
Stephen operates both as a one man orchestra and vocalist in the digital workstation world and also directing the finest musicians and singers to perform his songs and compositions. He continues to challenge himself by writing compositions that combine all the different types of music that he feels passionate about. He lectures at colleges and high schools to challenge students to soak up everything they can. Music is great for the brain.
