About M Cristina Marras
Sound designer | ItalyI’m an independent audio producer and sound artist living in Sardinia, Italy, with my roots spread across the world, having lived 10 years in Germany and 23 in Australia. This international background has shaped the way I listen and tell stories, while my foundation in radio journalism taught me the power of voice.
I’m drawn to creating immersive sound worlds that explore how we connect, remember, and shape identity, and I often use unreliable narrators to play with perception and invite listeners to question what they hear. Working fluently in English, Italian, and German, I love blending languages to reach monolingual audiences without losing the magic of each culture.
My professional journey includes podcast production, literary translation, and sound art installations. Highlights include designing an experiential sound path for the Museo CAMUC’s “Mirò incontra Maria Lai” exhibition and producing the podcast series “Parlami di Lei” for Radio Papesse, featuring cultural voices like Wu Ming 2 and Gian Maria Tosatti. I teach podcast writing and production extensively in schools, conservatories, and specialised workshops, employing learner-centered and design thinking methods.
I believe in cross-cultural teamwork and throughout the years have collaborated with artists, institutions, and festivals across borders, such as the Goethe Institut Milano (creating audio content for the German Pavilion at Triennale Milano 2022), FBi Radio’s All The Best in Australia, and Stuart Fowkes’ Cities and Memory project. For All The Best I presented workshops on creating innovative storytelling and on crafting multilingual pieces for monolingual audiences. I also serve as one of the mentors for The Jesse Cox Audio Fellowship supporting emerging storytellers with guidance and creative leadership. My collaboration with Cities and Memory involves contributing unique, place-based audio pieces that explore the textures of diverse global environments.
My work has been honoured as a finalist in prestigious competitions like the Berlin Hörspiel Festival, Silver Sound Biannual Sonic Dash, and Audio Flux. I’ve also won awards including the MemoRAS Regione Sardegna narration prize, Best Mini Headphone by Adionomia, and Transom’s Small, Random, and Meaningful award. My work has been part of the official selection at events like the UK International Audio Drama Festival and ON AIR FEST.
Beyond my work, I’m passionate about cultural history, European art and film, and crafting narrative soundscapes that linger. And yes, I talk to strangers, always curious, always listening.
