Senior Technical Audio Designer (Unity)
Company: Kabam
Location: Vancouver, BC, Canada
Job description

At Kabam, we’re constantly raising the bar of excellence in free-to-play gaming. We hire for passion and diversity so that we can triumph in our collective skill. Our teams are made up of a fusion of personalities and interests bound together by a collaborative nature, fun-loving culture, and a drive to do what it takes to make great games. And this is where you come in…

As a Senior Technical Sound Designer, you are responsible for creating, implementing, and optimizing all in-game audio to deliver an immersive player experience. You bridge the gap between the game’s creative audio direction and technical implementation, working closely with designers and engineers. You own audio end-to-end, including foley, UI sounds, character effects, and system-level integration in Unity, while ensuring performance, scalability, and quality across platforms. You help define and maintain audio standards, pipelines, and workflows, bringing the game world to life through sound from development through launch and beyond.

You can expect to be responsible for:
  • Work hands-on in Unity to implement and integrate all in-game audio, including foley, character sounds, UI/menu feedback, and system effects.
  • Collaborate with designers, composers, engineers, and producers to translate creative audio direction into immersive gameplay experiences.
  • Create, implement, and optimize audio assets and sound effects for performance, scalability, and quality across platforms.
  • Set up and maintain audio systems, parameters, and behaviors in-engine to support dynamic and responsive gameplay.
  • Apply industry best practices for audio pipelines, mixing, and technical workflows, and contribute to improving internal tools and processes.
  • Identify gaps in design or technical constraints and propose creative, implementable audio solutions.
  • Document audio implementation, maintain standards, and ensure asset integration aligns with technical constraints and optimization guidelines.
  • Work with the Game Director to source and manage an external music composer, and to design and implement the music.
  • Support iteration of creative and technical solutions based on feedback from team and playtests.
Your background includes:
  • Strong hands-on experience creating foley, UI/menu sounds, and character audio for games.
  • Proven ability to implement audio systems in Unity, including real-time mixing, triggers, and interactive behaviors.
  • Experience with audio middleware such as Wwise or FMOD is a plus.
  • Proficiency with audio production tools such as Pro Tools, REAPER, and common plugins (Waves, iZotope, etc.).
  • Familiarity with scripting or coding for audio implementation (C#, Python, Lua, or similar).
  • General understanding of music theory, to communicate music needs and audio direction to external partners (composers, ip holders).
  • Strong understanding of audio pipelines, technical workflows, and optimization for multiple platforms.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to iterate on creative and technical solutions.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills for working with designers, composers, engineers, and producers.
  • Attention to detail and ability to maintain high-quality audio standards across complex projects.
  • 5+ years of professional experience in game audio design and implementation.
  • Demonstrated experience shipping audio in at least one completed game title (AAA or high-quality indie titles preferred).
  • Experience working closely with multidisciplinary teams (designers, composers, engineers, producers).
  • Experience troubleshooting and debugging audio issues in a live game environment.
  • Optional / preferred: experience as a musician or vocalist, or with procedural audio systems.
$55 – $70 an hour
