Phoenix Labs is looking for a Sound Designer to work on our flagship title, Dauntless. The successful candidate must have excellent sound design and game audio creation skills, coupled with exceptional attention to detail. You will be expected you to work collaboratively and effectively with all teams in order to help deliver the best possible audio experience.

Phoenix Labs is located in Vancouver, BC. Applicants must live within commuting distance to the studio. Due to the information security concerns, complexity of the daily work, and other factors, this job is unsuitable for remote employees. This is a full-time, permanent position.

This is not a music composition position.


  • Work with the Audio Director to create and implement audio assets across all aspects of the project
  • Help craft a unique and iconic audio aesthetic
  • Own technical implementation for created assets, via both the audio engine and the game engine
  • Engage in system design for areas such as modular weapon systems, dynamic foley systems, and environmental procedural positioning
  • Work closely with other departments to reinforce and enhance game mechanics, modular content and artistic direction
  • Audio troubleshooting, bug identification, and fixing
  • Create unique and expressive creature vocalisations


  • Must have shipped at least one high quality PC or console title
  • Familiarity with Unreal editor or similar engine
  • Familiarity with Audiokinetic Wwise

What Will You Be Doing?

  • Create immersive world-class, original SFX using a range of sound design methods and techniques to the highest standards
  • Take complete responsibility for your projects to produce the best gaming VR aural experience
  • Work closely with the Audio Manager and other sound designers to always enhance, review and improve audio pipelines and systems
  • Deliver audio assets according to deadlines in conjunction with the Team managers
  • Collaborate and be involved in scripts for quality audio recording, production and inclusion
  • When required, the ability to compose and produce suitable music and stings.


  • Full cycle work experience as an Audio Designer on at least 4 shipped AAA titles
  • Good working knowledge of popular DAWs and audio editors such as Reaper, Pro-Tools, Cubase, Sound Forge and Audition
  • Have some working experience of creating UE4 Blueprints or similar visual scripting
  • Strong creative and demonstrable sound design skills

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years professional experience in Sound Design in the video game industry. Demos will be requested.
  • A diploma in Sound Design is an asset.
  • The ideal candidate is expected to have many years experience playing video games on consoles and have acquired a good understanding of current sound quality standards.
  • Moreover, the ideal candidate should be a team player; have a strong sense of creativity, analysis and synthesis; be hard-working; have effective interpersonal skills; and have strong organizational skills.
  • The ideal candidate must also be able to easily create and understand sound environments of video games.
  • Extensive knowledge of Windows audio software (Pro Tools, REAPER, Soundminer, SVN, etc.) and audio editors (Sound Forge, WaveLab, Audition, etc.), as well as web tools such as Confluence and JIRA. Must also have an expert knowledge of the most common VST plugins necessary for editing and mixing audio.
  • Complete understanding of technical limitations (audio optimisation, memory, etc.) related to sounds and audio formats used in the industry.
  • Understanding and good command of several audio engines (middleware such as FMOD and Wwise.)
  • Skilled at recording (sound effects/recording in the field), creating and editing original sounds in different formats.
  • Good knowledge of sound effects libraries available on the market.
  • Able to manage large databases (lists of sounds) clearly and logically.
  • Very good communicator, both verbal and written.
