Senior Audio Director
Company: Free Range Games
Location: Sausalito, CA, US
Job description

Free Range Games grows games the old fashioned way: we don’t put our team in cages, we work distributedly, and we don’t use toxic work/life trade-offs. Some of our crafters have worked together from PS1 to PS5 and will tell you about carving games one triangle at a time from punch cards.

We are some of the folk behind Spider-man, Tony Hawk, Lord of the Rings, Twitch Sings, Oddworld, Callisto Protocol, Shrek Super Slam, and dozens of mobile and web games. We believe every member of the team has a voice in what the game should be.

We prioritize community, family, and love-of-gaming over process, crunching, and TPS reports. And maybe that’s what you want too.

Free Range Games is in need of a senior audio director and sound engineer/designer. This individual will be responsible for running the sound studio adjacent to and in support of our new motion capture studio in Marina Del Rey, CA. As such, candidates must be located in the Greater Los Angeles area. This manager will run all VO operations for the motion capture team as well as any required dialogue or foley sessions needed by all sound design teams. This position also requires one to be up to speed on our tools and processes to create and produce sound design(s) and content on a project-by-project basis as needed.

Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with project producers and directors to identify the project's initial requirements in regards to VO, ADR and motion capture audio support and define a technical budget for these audio elements that includes essential metrics to achieve the desired audio vision.
  • Foster a culture of excellence within the entire audio team, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of data by promoting the use of best work practices.
  • Maintain and manage an audio room adjacent to and supporting a full-service, bleeding-edge motion capture facility. You will be on set during facial capture sessions maintaining the microphones and, where necessary, doing ADR in the booth where the production audio is not usable.
  • Run voice recording sessions for standard VO and facial capture.
  • Take ownership of the dialogue chain from recording to final assets.
  • Work with motion capture directors/teams to develop new techniques for supporting MoCap recording.
  • Ability to handle audio sound design for video games including assets and basic implementation. Wwise and Unreal experience preferred.
  • Direct experience in video game or film sound is required.
  • Preference will be given to people who have a wide range of personal interests and knowledge.
Requirements:
  • A strong knowledge of audio hardware and software, including ProTools other popular DAWs, and a familiarity with iZotope products.
  • At least 6+ years of experience in game, TV, Film and/or motion capture audio
  • Timecode expertise required.
  • Extensive sound design experience.
  • Flexibility and the ability to learn new tools and techniques quickly.
  • Ability to develop new processes when existing practices prove insufficient.
  • Familiarity with film and video game recording practices including Dialogue Recording, ADR, and field recording.
  • Ability to handle professional stress with a healthy demeanor.
  • Time management skills and the ability to prioritize to hit often demanding deadlines.
  • Attention to detail and careful record keeping abilities.
  • Unreal Engine and WWISE familiarity is greatly favored.
  • Experience interfacing with Faceware and/or AJA Ki pro hardware is a big plus.
